Junior researchers (3D City Modeling and Simulation)

GATE institute "Big Data for Smart Society"" is an autonomous research institute, established in 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria as a joint initiative between Sofia University Bulgaria, Chalmers University of Technology and Chalmers Industrial Technology, Sweden. Its mission is to accelerate the Big Data and Artificial Intelligence research, innovation and education in collaboration with government, industry and society as a whole.
GATE is focused on developing research capacity in 4 Data Science areas:

  • Big Data Management
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Big Data Insight
  • Software Engineering for Big Data and AI

The GATE Institute is seeking to appoint Researchers in 3D City Modeling and Simulation, who will be intricately involved in the GATE City Digital Twin project. It is a large interdisciplinary flagship project aims at developing a digital twin platform for designing, testing, applying and servicing the entire lifecycle of the built environment. This ambitious research project will be developed for the first time in Bulgaria. Crucial to its success is the building of semantically enriched 3D model of a city and the further development of the underlying scientific methods and technologies to facilitate the simulation of city scenarios (urban climate, the transport of goods and people, infrastructure development, buildings’ energy performance, air and noise pollution, etc.). Specific semantics will be developed that address city-scale simulation requirements. This may include the development of new or contributions to emerging Application Domain Extensions for CityGML, meaningful integration of data from heterogeneous sources and semantically enrichment with additional data (e.g. social data), design and implementation of relational (i.e. PostGIS) or a graph database (i.e. Neo4j) to store and import/export geospatial data.

An ultimate goal of the projects is to go beyond digital replicas and visualizations to explore the full potential of integration of data from all stages of urban development and thus push the applications of urban modelling, simulation, analysis and visualization.

With respect to its planned intensive development in 2020, GATE Institute is looking for talented researchers for the following positions:

Junior researchers

Common responsibilities

  • Develop new methods, algorithms and automated solutions for the integration, simulation and visualization of data (including geo-spatial and spatio-temporal data) originated from multiple distributed sources;
  • Develop 3D models that combine geometric details, rich semantics and spatial relationships;
  • Construct CFD simulations inputs at different levels-of-detail (to support CFD at different urban scales) and ensure that these can be directly used in an urban simulation software;
  • Contribute to development of ontology-based definitions and standard’s extensions;
  • Keep up-to-date with latest technology trends and relevant technical standards, such as Resource Description Framework (RDF), CityGML, IFC, LandInfra;
  • Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities.

One or more of the following responsibilities

  • Proposes appropriate (and innovative) data ingestion, preparation, integration and enrichment techniques, optimally addressing data quality requirements;
  • Participates in the development of Big Data Analytics solutions by designing and implementing advanced Machine Learning, Statistics, Information extraction and retrieval techniques in the field of Future Cities.
